Makiki Talks

October 15th, 2009 by Kristen

A few months ago, I got an invitation (through e-mail) from a blog reader to join Makiki Talks, a website designed to keep Makiki community members connected, informed, and active. I LOVE the site, and I encourage all of my fellow neighbors to join as well!
Here are some events coming up this weekend that I found out about from the site (descriptions taken from the Event section of Makiki Talks):

The SOEST Open House at UH
Friday, October 16 from 8am-2pm and Saturday October 17 from 10am-2pm
"The School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and Technology is having their 10th open house. Free, hands-on science activities for kids of all ages. Learn about tsunamis, volcanoes, earthquakes, microscopic ocean creatures, rocks that glow, and much more! . Parking is $5."

Friends of the Makiki Community Library Annual Membership Meeting
October 17, 2009 from 10:30am to 12pm
"Join the Friends of the Makiki Community Library (FMCL) for its Annual Membership Meeting. FMCL will be accepting new membership applications (only $10/year to be a member), as well as reporting on its 2009-year-in-review, discussing exciting plans for the future (hint: computers & fans), and electing new Board members. Light refreshments and coffee will be provided from Makiki's very own Sure Shot Cafe.
To RSVP, please email name and number attending to Della at daubelatti@hawaii.rr.com"

At 10:00am on Saturday, October 17, 2009, there will also be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Manoa Public Library. What a wonderful way to be a part of history!

Hi Kristen, good to see the community still getting together.

In Hilo we are having the 1st Astronomy Block Party. Yep, believe it or not, the science community locking down their street and throwing a block party with music and stuff. Then they will be opening up their labs (down here at Sea Level) to the public to see how they control the telescopes up on Mauna Kea. It's this Saturday at the UH tech Park starting about noon I think.

You Hilo people, come check it out. No, I don't have a part with it but I plan on going. After all, I'm a geek who loves the original Star Trek series.
